Hi, I’m Ben.

I’m a Sydney portrait photographer. My work is about people: the real expression, the in-between moment, the version of you that looks like you on your best day.

Emerald Studios is built on a simple idea: a good photograph is rare, and worth treasuring like a gem. Beyond portraits, I also shoot events and weddings, and bring the same patience and eye for detail to every frame.

I’ve had a camera in my hands my whole life. My mum is my role model and a brilliant photographer; she taught me everything she knows and runs Jewel Photography in Inverell. My dad is a mechanic, and from him I picked up a love of how things work, especially mechatronics.

Growing up, photography was a family affair. At eisteddfods, Mum and I shot while Dad ran logistics, and when it came time for posed photos, my sister, an incredible dancer who performed in the Opera House at just 14, would get all the kids into position. They’re still the two people I call when shit hits the fan.

I was quiet as a kid, and talking to people didn’t come easily. Moving to Sydney to chase photography changed that. The camera gave me a way in, and it’s brought some amazing friends into my life. It’s also why I love portraits: I know how it feels to be nervous in front of a stranger, so I’ll make sure you feel comfortable.
